Diary Entries- 27/02/2012

Today my group and I filmed our media film, 'The widows dept.' We filmed it in Stilton and it all eventually went according to plan. We did have a few actor problems at he start; two of our three actors dropped out today at the filming day. Shannon Bott and Sam Gazely both dropped out today because of other commitments; even though they where both playing main roles, the femme fetal and the assassin respectively. However, we eventually replaced them and sorted out the following problems, just in time to film a successful shoot.

The story is set in an urban city; where late at night we have a women who is despretly trying to escape the boss of the big city casino. Her and her late husband have raked up astronamical depts which she is unable to pay off, so after plenty of warning, she decides to flee the big city. As she is running away, despreate not to be seen by anyone with any connection to the casino, she bumps into our detective. She pleades her case to him and asks for his help, despite initally wanting to help her, he does not want to get into trouble again so he decides not to get involved. He says, "Not my problem lady," However does he return later on? The opening concludes with the lady running down a back street alley, only to realise its a deadend and before she can react, she bumps into the smooth talking assain. She instantly reconises the danger, as he pulls out a gun a bullet is fired. Only for the assain to hit the floor. What happened? The lady screams at a shadow, "No! What have you done!"

The identity of this person is not revealed in the opening. So who is he? Why did he help? Why was she so angered by the death of the assain? What is actually going on?

Lighting Workshop

Learning Objectives:

·         To understand what lighting is

·         To understand the principle of three point lighting

·         To be able to correctly identify the parts of lighting kit

What is lighting?

All videos have some sort of lighting, it can be natural lighting (from the sun) or artificially. First and foremost you need enough light to be able to shoot your scene and you need to be able to identify the lighting sources.

NOTE: You must only use one piece of light. Too much light will leave the picture uneven and unbalanced.

If the light bulb blows, remove plug from socket.

NEVER try to replace the bulb, the bulb will automatically smash inside, for your own safety.

When pulling the light out you work backwards, pull the plug, then socket to come off wall

Kit must contain:

·         2x Redheads

·         2x Stand

·         2x Barn Door

·         2x Bulb

·         Power Lead

·         2x Power serge

·         Gloves

·         A set of clips

·         A set of gels

Treat them all with care

Surge is a very important safety device, no surge no use.

How to Use

Tighten the legs first

Work out you height

Cable should always be going down, never hanging

Barn door level with the leg

Set       Test     Re-Set

Yellow Red      Yellow

Never use an extension lead, can’t handle this amount of electricity

NEVER use this equipment outside

Lighting guy holds the light WITH GLOVES!!!

Must not be closer than one meter to the roof- or it might burn

Red head gets hot after 10 seconds

Leave the light for 15 minutes after use

Yellow button turns it on

Turn it out from plug

If you can touch it for more than 5 seconds with no pain, it’s off

Three Point Lighting

The three point lighting technique is a standard method used in visual media such as videos, etc. It is where there are three lights coming from different angles in order to create effect.

KEY LIGHT: This is the main light of the camera, lights the character.

FILL LIGHT: Opposite side of the key light. There t support or add effect

BACK LIGHT: Light from behind, to light the character up from behind or create a shadow, could be used to identify a villain.
